DAY 31

"Technique alone is never enough. You have to have passion. Technique alone is just an embroidered potholder."

— Raymond Chandler

KEEP GOING

Hi Writers,

We don't need to force anything. We allow the truth to be told, even if it seems, at times, temporarily at odds with our idea of the story. Sometimes it may seem that we're off course, but as we stay with it, we discover a deeper truth. As our hero moves toward his goal, he encounters obstacles, and we might be surprised that he's not doing what we thought he would. This doesn't mean that we're doing it wrong.

At this point we're in no position to go back and edit. Our only job is to write to our projected goal for the week. The first draft is very personal. Sometimes I'll even write stuff I know won't make it to the second draft. I just need to get it out. Writing the first draft might even bring up big feelings. Terrific. We don't need to get hung up on them. Feelings are like Portland weather—they're going to change in a minute.

Also, it's helpful to be curious about what's going on in our own life, and to ask where the nature of this experience lives in our story. Once we're tuned into our story, the universe has an uncanny way of feeding us our lines.

Get excited by the conflict.

Explore the opposite direction of where you think the scene is heading.

Allow yourself to be surprised.
